Deuce Cities Henhouse

After putting it off for the past few summers, I think we’re going to finally paint the house this year!! <--- Those exclamation points are a serious understatement. A little background: The exterior of the house was the almost-deal-breaker for us when we bought our place. It’s really, really dated and unfortunately somewhat permanent. At some point, someone decided it would be a good idea to cover the clapboard siding with 10 “x 20″ inches panels of asbestos-ridden grossness. Herein lies my problem: making that siding look good.

I’ve been pinning up a storm over over on pinterest these days to get some ideas for exterior paint colors. Featured above are a few of my fav examples. I’m head over heels for the first one, but not sure I can pull it off at our place. I’m putting together another post next week where I Photoshop colors on to my house (so suspenseful, right?).

All around, I am sucker for dark blues and grays and am helpless against a yellow door’s powers.

I would love to know if anyone has experience with painting this age of house and, even better, does anyone have any experience with the aforementioned siding? Here’s a link to a few pics of how the place looks as of last spring.

Thanks for your input in advance!

As these exact photos sit in my own “Exterior Paint Inspiration” folder, I must say you have mighty good taste! We’re faced with the same job this summer, but I’m not to excited about all the work. Who’s idea was it to buy a two story house on a hill? Ugh.

      Totally Lol’d at that one.

What kind of siding do you have?

T-111. I know some boards are pretty bad and will probably need replacing. Our last house was the same and it wasn’t too bad to repaint. My parents house was built in 1918 and I don’t know how many times I had to repaint their garage (house was aluminum sided before they bought it). That clapboard is so old and weird. You scrape and scrape and clean and clean beforehand, then the thing is peeling again in two years. I’m convinced they had kids just so they wouldn’t have to keep repainting that thing themselves every couple years, because they haven’t done it again since I moved out. Now I’m just counting the years until my boys can to the painting for ME! (only kind of joking)

I suppose it will be a pain for you to paint all those grooves in that T-111 too. I recently painted our paneled wall in the bedroom, it took twice as long to paint with the grooves. I feel for ya.

I’m with you all the way, painting help is a totally valid reason to have kids;)

i discovered a fantastic way to find image sources…via design for mankind.
    http://www.google.ca/imghp?hl=en&tab=wi
just click on the little camera icon an either paste the url where you saw the image or save the image to your computer and upload it. i’ve found a bunch of original sources this way.

also…we painted our house dark grey with a yellow door a couple of years ago. :)

Oh woah, so cool! Thanks for the link. I hate how things don’t get pinned properly on pinterest. All of a sudden a photo isn’t getting due credit and pinners can’t find the true source.

I bet your house is totally adorable.

I know this one! I’ve got it saved in my favorites: http://www.designsponge.com/2009/09/honey-interiors.html

I can’t WAIT to paint our house. It’s not bad enough to tackle yet this year, but hopefully next year we can make it something that is more appealing. I’m really looking forward to your photoshopped mock ups! I want to do the same thing, but I’m just getting started with the software and probably won’t be able to do something that advanced for a while.

Ahh, thanks Emily! I was so curious about that house.

I’m glad someone is looking forward to my mock-ups (only kidding). These aren’t going to be works of art by any means, more like quick sketches of what the colors might look like.

Now I’m off to check out that link.

Unfortunately, I don’t have any exterior painting experience but I LOVE the color choices you’ve selected so far, especially the first one! Gorgeous!

Oh boy. I have a small house with the same asbestos siding. The safest, cheapest and best way to deal with it is to paint it. Live with it. Do you know what percentage of asbestos you have? Thee price for getting rid of it, as well as the necessity, goes up as the % goes up. My house is much smaller than yours and it would cost around $50,000 to have it removed safely. It’s just not worth it to us as we are selling soon.
However, we had our house painted dark grey and the trim white and the door red. It allows me to forget that under all that makeup lurks evil!

    • jessica March 16, 2012

Oh yeah and this kind of siding it is super easy to paint!

    • Scoops March 18, 2012

No I have no idea what % it is, but the guy who checked out our house before we moved in said it would be a 60k job to have asbestos abatement. The only thing we can really do is try and make it look better. I love a red door too, normally that is my number one go to, but then I saw this yellow door. I bet your place is super cute.

The more I hear from people the more I think we gotta go dark. Thanks for your feedback, it’s good to hear from someone who knows.
