Deuce Cities Henhouse

This room is basically falling apart, well, not really falling apart. It needs a lot of work. The guest room is located in the middle of our second floor, and because we have a 108 year old home, that means theres been some settling over the years. The plaster walls have quite a few cracks and old patch jobs that need cleaning up. READ MORE

What a Difference a Year Makes

So a year ago yesterday I did a post about how cold and snowy it was and how I couldn't stand it anymore. Seriously, last year was nuts. I think by February 1st it had already snowed 5 feet or something. Totally unreal, plus it was in the negative ...
Check out my Knobs

Check out my Knobs

I thought I'd try and be all cool like Daniel over at Manhattan Nest and spend an evening removing paint from my bedroom door knobs, It would've been cool if it won't have been so hard. So I've been wanting to remove the paint from these knobs for awhile ...

I've been in the market for a good lamp for the music room, in fact, I need new lamps for a lot of rooms. Since we moved in (and even before) we've made a habit of buying the $9.99 Ikea lamps with paper shades when we need a little light, ...

Nerding Out

Oh man, I totally got all nerdy yesterday. After watching 2 episodes of Secrets from a Stylist I felt inspired to pretend I was a stylist (yeah right.) Anyway I went around and found all my pillows and tchotchkes set them all out in a ...

Coral & Blue & Grey

I had taken a few photos around the house this weekend thinking I might try and do a post called "Inspired by the Royal Tenenbaum's" or something weird like that, but when I went back to look at them this afternoon I realized that they weren't really that Tenenbaumesque ...

A New Home

I am so excited to announce my new blog design powered by Wordpress! After 3 years at Blogger and a year of debating about the pros and cons of migrating, I finally went for it. It wasn't easy, but I'm convinced it will be totally worth it. I am more ...

Chairs, Chairs, Chairs!

Hi! Does anyone else love a good chair as much as I do? My collection has been growing and growing and is starting to get a little out of hand. I've been accumulating chairs for awhile but I took it to the next level over the last 2 months when ...

Big Updates On The Way!!!

Big things are in the works around here at the old Henhouse. After wanting to switch from blogger to wordpress for the last year, I finally have got the ball rolling and am taking the plunge! It's been a great learning experience so far. I forget how much I love ...

Hi! I’m Alison Allen

I started Deuce Cities Henhouse in 2009 – a blog about fixing up and restoring my 110-year-old Minneapolis home and updating our worn out and out, dated Wisconsin cabin. My family and I (my husband and two boys) moved into our current home nearly ten years ago, and since then I’ve been chronicling my journey of owning, renovating, decorating and DIY-ing our home.

I’m passionate about empowering women to take on projects that they might have normally not had the confidence to do, incorporating modern design and aesthetic into my home, thoughtful design solutions, and landscaping. I’ve done it all, from easy do-it-yourself home improvement projects to full on renovations and remodels.
