Deuce Cities Henhouse

I want to spend a good chunk of the summer focused on updating the exterior of our Wisconsin cabin. I’ve got big plans, and at the top of the list is a new paint job. Since the day we looked at it, we talked about eventually painting it black. I like the grey-green color that the board and batten is stained now, but it has already faded in the two summers we have been here. It needed to be freshened up, and for us it was the perfect opportunity to take it to a darker place. READ MORE

My July Garden

Asiatic Lily The gardens came through in perfect fashion for the kids birthday's, both which were hosted in the backyard. This year really has been the best garden year one on record. Everything is much more mature and filled in, thus leaving me with a lot more time on my ...
Ice Cream Cake

Ice Cream Layer Cake

For Gus' birthday this year I decided to try something other than your standard issue birthday cake. Being that Finn's birthday is only 13 days before Gus', I didn't really want to spend my entire month of July making cake and ice cream (although I kind of did). A little ...
Gus is 2

Happy Birthday Gus!

Gus is 2 today! Yesterday we celebrated our happy (and newly mulletless) 2 year old with a BBQ in the backyard! I really can't believe that my little guy is 2. Just crazy. It was so much fun watching Gus enjoy his day. In our family, Finn's personality often overshadows ...

Beet, Fennel & Pea Salad

CSA Recipe : Roasted Beet, Fennel & Pea Salad

So, you're one of those people that hates beets, or you are like me an you tolerate them, but you don't go out of your way to eat them. I personally kind of think beets taste like dirt, but for some reason I'm kind of into that, still I don't ...
Modern Bunkbeds

Thinking About : Modern Bunk Beds

We've been talking for awhile about the boys sharing a room once Gus grows out of his crib, (which should be coming to an end around the fall). There are lots of reasons for the boys to share a room, but the main one is because they want to. At ...

Hi! I’m Alison Allen

I started Deuce Cities Henhouse in 2009 – a blog about fixing up and restoring my 110-year-old Minneapolis home and updating our worn out and out, dated Wisconsin cabin. My family and I (my husband and two boys) moved into our current home nearly ten years ago, and since then I’ve been chronicling my journey of owning, renovating, decorating and DIY-ing our home.

I’m passionate about empowering women to take on projects that they might have normally not had the confidence to do, incorporating modern design and aesthetic into my home, thoughtful design solutions, and landscaping. I’ve done it all, from easy do-it-yourself home improvement projects to full on renovations and remodels.
