Deuce Cities Henhouse

For the last year I have been slowly removing the wall-to-wall 40 year old carpet that plagued our cabin. Can you imagine how many wet feet and soggy bodies this carpet had seen? Barf. The majority of the carpet was ripped out the minute we closed on the place exposing the hardwood floors underneath. For months after I continued to find staples that needed to be pried up, but eventually we had the floors totally uncovered.... READ MORE

Grout... Exciting (not).

Grout… Exciting (not).

BEFORE Step one to updating my outdated bathroom was cleaning the gross floor tile. I actually thought that brown was the color the grout was supposed to be. Then I wised up and realized that maybe the grout was just really, seriously dirty (duh scoops). I did a little pre-hardware-store-visit ...

I’m out numbered, by a lot!

I might be crazy, but I took on watching my good friend's baby girl, Penny, on Mondays. Yesterday was our first day together, and I'm happy to report we all survived. You might remember that I helped Penny's mom and dad (Beak & Cam) get the nursery together prior to ...

I came across Loll Designs last week while surfing the interwebz and I was in love as soon as I saw the word "DUH" on the lid of their outdoor fire pit. Loll is an outdoor modern furniture company based in Duluth, MN. Founded in 2003, Loll makes all of ...
Aunt Fern's Egg Bake

Aunt Fern’s Egg Bake

This egg bake represents one of the best breakfast recipes on record! It's so good, that I might regret even sharing it with you. It's world famous and I have all my friends convinced that I invented it, the truth is I embellished it, and my Aunt Fern invented it ...

Bathroom Dreamin’

Alright, I'm diving right into my first fall project. One of my readers asked last March why I hadn't done any bathroom updates and that got me thinking... Why hadn't I? Our house has two bathrooms, one is located on the 2nd floor, and is shared between all the bedrooms ...

It’s Almost Over

Hope you all got to enjoy the long weekend, I know we did. We took a trip to the Minnesota State Fair on Sunday with Elsa and her family. This was not our greatest idea as parents of young kids, but you gotta get out of the house sometimes. It ...

Gone Cannin’

Just one step closer to completing Scoops' Ultimate Bloody Mary Kit. Today I canned cucumbers (aka pickles) and spicy brine for my oh-so-spicy Bloody Mary mix. It's gonna kill me to wait two weeks to try these babies but I am very confident they will be a success. I'm hoping ...
Pro Tip : Don't Use Drano

Pro Tip : Don’t Use Drano

Hey guys, here's a nice little PSA from yours truly. If you have an old house, with old pipes don't use Drano unless you'd like a new kitchen ceiling. You can thank me for that little tip later. Here's the deal. Our bathroom sink was missing the drain stopper, I've ...

Hi! I’m Alison Allen

I started Deuce Cities Henhouse in 2009 – a blog about fixing up and restoring my 110-year-old Minneapolis home and updating our worn out and out, dated Wisconsin cabin. My family and I (my husband and two boys) moved into our current home nearly ten years ago, and since then I’ve been chronicling my journey of owning, renovating, decorating and DIY-ing our home.

I’m passionate about empowering women to take on projects that they might have normally not had the confidence to do, incorporating modern design and aesthetic into my home, thoughtful design solutions, and landscaping. I’ve done it all, from easy do-it-yourself home improvement projects to full on renovations and remodels.
