Deuce Cities Henhouse

Goodbye 2018, Hello 2019

Hey Guys! Phew, it always feels good when the holidays are behind us and we can move on to the New Year. I am finally getting the chance to settle back into the day-to-day, and the mundane and boring is being embraced with open arms. Week after week of activity is too much for this old gal. I'm not much of a big New Year resolutions type of person, I prefer to think of myself as constantly READ MORE

Countdown to Bruce

Guys, can you hardly stand it? Less than a week until Bruce comes to visit me here in the Twin Cities. I know I can barely stand it, two back to back nights with the Boss, 4 Bruce shows in one year. How could I be so lucky? I thought ...

It’s Picture Hanging Time!

Well all this reupholstering of dining room chairs has me in desperate need of getting my dining room a smidge bit more put together. This room has been driving me crazy since we moved in. It's the paneling, it's nice, but it's dark and it gets in the way of ...

Kitchen Ideas : Table as Workspace

As someone who only dreams of renovating her kitchen, I found this kitchen featured in last months Better Homes & Gardens (yes, I read it and I love it) very inspirational. Living in a 100 year old home has it's challenges, one of the biggest of course is the kitchen ...

S.A.D.Z.

I saw the sun on Sunday Hello out there. I haven't felt like blogging lately, I actually haven't felt like doing anything. It's all part of the changing of the seasons I'm afraid. I'm already sick of waking up in darkness, and I'm even more sick of spending my nights ...
Easy Chair Reupholstering

Easy Chair Reupholstering

Remember how I found 5 chairs that matched my Drexel mid-century dining room set on Craig's awesome list? Well I needed to get those suckers covered in new fabric so they matched the rest of my set. It was 3 years ago that I reupholstered the original set, and lucky ...
Fall Steps

Fall Steps

Last weekend I got the front of the house into full on fall mode by changing out the planters at the base of the steps. Bring on the Mums, Kale, and fancy Pumpkins. I'm not one of those people that loves Halloween. I know that there are some out there ...

Hi! I’m Alison Allen

I started Deuce Cities Henhouse in 2009 – a blog about fixing up and restoring my 110-year-old Minneapolis home and updating our worn out and out, dated Wisconsin cabin. My family and I (my husband and two boys) moved into our current home nearly ten years ago, and since then I’ve been chronicling my journey of owning, renovating, decorating and DIY-ing our home.

I’m passionate about empowering women to take on projects that they might have normally not had the confidence to do, incorporating modern design and aesthetic into my home, thoughtful design solutions, and landscaping. I’ve done it all, from easy do-it-yourself home improvement projects to full on renovations and remodels.
